Here is my latest drawing challenge, a pair of  binoculars. I originally started sketching them in a perspective point of view and found it too confusing to get the proportions, relationships of shapes and details realistically drawn. Instead, I adapted the muli-view drawing pattern to include a top, front and side view of them.  This drawing pattern provided a structure to figure out how to keep the drawing in proportion, connect the shapes and added the details.  Multiview drawings are typically used in the architectural design world showing a plan, elevation and section view of objects or buildings.

The two preliminary drawings below were done in my sketchbook.  Practicing before the final drawing adds to my drawing confidence and gives me an opportunity to get familiar with the drawing subject.  Noticing features, shapes and their spacial relationship to each other are key aspects to successfully drawing objects idealistically.  This was especially true for this one!

    Oooo. I like this, binoculars were an interesting item to use to draw multiview, and i bet a bit challenging. It is interesting to look at as a whole image, very unique, and stimulating to the eye. I love that you chose binoculars period(: i would hang that drawing in my house haha, its too cool and it would make people look and examine it because of how nifty it is.

    I am a professor at Purdue University with focus on K-12 Engineering Education. I am writing an article on design sketching and would like to seek permission to include your design sketch of the binoculars in the manuscript. The journal is The Technology and Engineering Teacher, an ITEEA publication. I would provide you opportunity to see the manuscript when finished. When teaching young learners about design sketching, I have used the sketch in a presentation to (5th grader) to illustrate the power of multi-view drawings. I only show the right view of the object and students and teachers cannot guess what the object is. It is a wonderful illustration of the power of multi-view drawings. They are shocked when I show all three views. Please let me know if it is possible to have permission to use this sketch in the publication.
