Start by Drawing Small

What a brilliant way to use an office supply!  I am inspired to know that other visual artists are comfortable practicing their drawing skills with small images. This technique works for me too.  By keeping the drawing image size small, I don’t get overwhelmed with the large paper size.  I usually draw a small rectangular shaped box on my page and use this area for the drawing.  What do you know, Post-it notes as a sketching tool!

This idea is from Ricky Wilson-Cloot, (better known as Ricky Trickartt), who is a graphic artist based in London.  Here is a quote from Ricky’s websiteI began to convince myself I couldn’t draw when I got out of practice, and found myself a little daunted by big canvases. I found post-it notes to be small and friendly enough for getting ideas down, but disposable enough if it goes wrong.”

His website has more of these post-it note images.  This site is fun because you can click on the sketchbook to turn each page.

I was excited to se that I wasn’t the only person with this problem. The big paper or board seems to affend me in a way. It’s almost like I recieve artist block, once I’ve seen the blank page so picking up this skill will be very useful thank you….

I love this Idea. I never really liked sketching or doodling because I didn’t have enough ideas to fill up a whole page. With this idea I can fill a page up with out get overwhelmed. It also looks more neat and organized.

This is such a neat idea. I think it also teaches us how to draw different sizes. This inspires me to practice drawing more even in small scale. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Jacqueline Liberio says:

Normally when I freehand I prefer to use the full page in my sketch book so that I can let my hand glide across the page as I sketch. It makes me feel free and like I can do anything with the page as my ideas expand with the image. I haven’t used this technique before but I feel that this is a good way to organize different thoughts and concepts. I like the way it shows the different ideas in their own little section. (Almost an area rug effect!)

I think we should do a sticky note drawing challenge, that would be interesting.
