Hand Drawing on an iPAD

Yes!  Adobe Ideas has become my new medium for exploring hand drawing. The Adobe Ideas app provides an opportunity to hand draw images or draw on photographs.  You can then save these images to a file and send them by email.  In the app store, search for Adobe Ideas and note you will need to purchase this app.

1st iPad drawing with finger

I am enjoying learning how to use my hand drawing skills on an iPad.  At the same time, it is challenging because I results are not the quality that I would want.  The best way for me to learn a new technique is to allow myself to draw multiple, quick sketches of the same subject.  I will let go of the results and allow myself to celebrate learning how to use Adobe Ideas.

Flowers are one of my favorite subject and I am familiar with their shapes.  This makes them a perfect subject for me to practice a new technique.

2nd Drawing with stylist tool

I focused on drawing lines, making shapes and adding a variety of value.  To keep the process simple, I kept the color palette  neutral.  There is a warm grey, a cool grey, an an olive green and black.

These three images show the progress that I was able to make.  I am glad to be flexible enough to try new drawing techniques and yet I know that I want to make much more progress!

  1. I appreciate the progress and images you have made. I enjoy the monochromatic quality fo them, I am anxious to see them in color! Nice Job, have you tried any interior spaces yet?

Prof. Sipp thank you for sharing the app for the ipad, I’m going to buy the app and start sketching on my husband Ipad. Did you pay $5.99 for the app? I would like to know I want to make sure I’m baying the right one.

      Hello Mildred-

Yes, I did pay $5.99 for the app. I will say that I recommend that you do your homework and practice assignments in pencil on paper while you are in the perspective class.

The iPad has some challenges that are not present with pencil and paper.

      Thank you – Prof. Stephanie

I think I need an Ipad!

    • drawinghand says:

Yes and I will encourage you to use pencil and paper as you are first learning to draw. There are media challenges that drawing on the iPad has and would be easier to meet these challenges having drawing experience.

  4. R. Craig Walker says:

Hello, “Drawing Hand”, your abilities certainly improved over the span of just three sketches. I thought that the napkin background was nice on the 2nd sketch, but the 3rd is really praiseworthy! You do a fine job with flowers and foliage, taking great care with the hand and equal patience with the eye, which one must invest and then apply to transmit the delicate features of flowers, such as you have shown…I enjoy seeing your progress. Is using the Ipad similar to mastering the complexities involved in using the features of the CAD?

  5. madeleine says:

do you find you miss the tactility of paper? That’s one of the things I like best about drawing…I worry that in an electronic media, it would function more like note-taking, as the gesture seem like they’d need to be smaller and more precise…

  6. drawinghand says:

I think that I am more intreged by learning the process of this medium and less at the results. I agree that paper, pencil, watercolor all have an appealing tactile quality. I know the iPAD drawing will be a part of the story and yet not the only story. It is very easy to finish a small piece on the iPAS, save it, send by email quickly. I like this part too.

  18. Hi Prof Stephanie, As you can see, I am a day late and a dollar short on keeping up with the social media. I must focus and change my habits! That includes starting to use software and apps like this Adobe Illustrator. I have tried it before with no success. I will try the app, you made it sound simple.
