Floor plan rendered

Want to jazz up your floor plan?  Take time to add character to your plan by rendering the patterns, texture and adding value. Here are a couple of things to remember.  The patterns are rendered with just enough shape and key visual characters to show the flavor since you are viewing them from far away. To assist the viewer in distinguishing one object from another, plan to use a variety of value, line and stippling. It is great to have a picture or the actual finish to study as you are rendering.  This will help you to capture the essence of the object or finish with important visual characteristics.

Check out this video that demonstrates adding pattern, texture and value to the bedroom floor plan shown above.  Enjoy!

I loved this post. I remember you talking about this in Architectural Drafting class when we were discussing the presentation drawing. That was one of my favorite parts of the project because I really got to add a lot of detail to make the drawing more visually interesting.

    Hi Prof. Stephanie!
I’m going to apply these concepts to this week’s assignment. It looks like an effective floor plan, but seems kind of boring without the details that rendering patterns and texture provide. Adding a few plants here and there definitely added an element of comfort to the spaces, and helped me utilize the placement of windows in the plan. I like drawing them, too! So far, I have two pages in my sketchbook with pencil drawings of the various plants and containers around my house. I’ll be sure to add the dirt (great tip!) and the top view of the container as well.

Love to watch you draw – you make it look sooo easy!! I love the bedding details and the plants, I’ll have to remember to add them to my drawings in the future. The table tops and wood grain are inspiration – I’ll have to pratice. Thanks for sharing.

      Hello Melissa,
Glad to get your comments and positive feedback. Remember I started this drawing journey 8 years ago and have gotten myself here. You will too! Prof. Stephanie

Great video, always love to learn more about drawing and how to add texture to a one dimensional drawing. I look forward to more videos and also follow some of your favorite blog sites. Thanks! Sheila Stroud

This is an interesting post definitely something I would continue to look back at for adding texture to a floor plan. I wish I would have looked on this blog before completing for this week’s assignment. Knowing how and where to add texture to a floor plan really brings out the floor plan.
    Thanks for the info!
